Outdoor Classroom
The Cypress Preserve Trust has created an outdoor laboratory through the installation of informational signs along the trails and a dedicated “classroom” space at the north end of the meadow, providing visitors and students with unique opportunities to explore and learn about the natural environment.
From the very beginning, one of the fundamental objectives of the Cypress Preserve Trust was to establish a serene and educational setting that could serve as an outdoor laboratory for the study and appreciation of our natural environment. The Trust has been deeply committed to creating a space where visitors, educators, and students can engage with nature in meaningful ways, fostering a deeper understanding of the ecological systems that sustain us.
A key initiative in achieving this objective has been the strategic placement of numerous informational signs along the preserve’s half-mile trail. These signs are carefully designed to highlight and explain the diverse environmental elements that thrive within the preserve, offering visitors a self-guided tour through the natural wonders of the area. Each sign serves as a window into the rich biodiversity of the urban forest, providing valuable insights into the flora, fauna, and other natural resources that are often overlooked in our everyday lives.
In addition to the informative signs, the Trust has developed another remarkable resource for environmental education: the “classroom” located at the north end of the meadow. This outdoor classroom is a dedicated space where teachers and students can gather to discuss their observations, share their findings, or simply reflect on the beauty of their surroundings. The benches, thoughtfully arranged to encourage group discussion and individual study, provide a comfortable setting for educational activities. This classroom is open and accessible to students and teachers at all times, offering a unique opportunity to integrate hands-on environmental learning into the school curriculum.
By creating these educational resources within the preserve, the Cypress Preserve Trust continues to fulfill its mission of making the preserve not just a place of natural beauty, but also a dynamic outdoor laboratory.
